Bryson, his "In A Sunburned Country" is the finest travelbook on Australia I've come across, and this early work of his is delightful. Outstanding as a collection with some stand out stories: I read "Things to Do When You're Goth in the Country" first and it captured the flavor of the collection. The Christian authors may also have wanted to distinguish their writings from the pagan and Judaic texts written on scrolls. In this novel, Shute has some harsh things to say about the new (British) National Health Service, as well as the socialist Labour government, themes he would later develop more fully in In the Wet. However, the next story I read "The New Mohawk," about a man who has the Gaza Strip in his mohawk, got my attention. The Far Country is a novel by Nevil Shute, first published in 1952. The novel is based on four main characters: Hortense, Queenie, Gilbert and Bernard and the story is told from each of their points of view. A scroll is more awkward to use. It's weird, wonderful and profound. A book is much easier to read, to find a page that you want, and to flip through. Searching for small-town America is a joy when you follow Bill Bryson.
